2017 Model Partnerships and Volunteers of the Year honered at citywide celebration

Suzanne Rosenblum, Bayside Elementary School: In her first year volunteering at Bayside, Rosenblum has had a weekly presence in the school library. She reshelves books, prepares materials and makes bookmarks for students, who also seek her out in the library on the days they know she is there. As a young adult who is deaf, Rosenblum willingly shares sign language with students eager to learn more. “It has been a win-win relationship as our students have used strategies to grow in their understanding of others with differences and learned to be more thoughtful in how they communicate, [and] we have seen Suzanne blossom in her own growth and development in engaging our students,” said Principal Catherine Brumm.

Cities of Service Visits Virginia Beach

In February, Cities of Service Executive Director, Myung J. Lee, and Program Manager, Alice Kamens, visited Virginia Beach, VA, to see the Virginia Beach READS mentor-tutoring program in action. Virginia Beach READS is run by the City of Virginia Beach’s GrowSmart team and is housed in the Department of Economic Development.

Myung and Alice visited Bayside Elementary School and met with the principal, volunteer tutors, and participating students. There they were able to see first-hand how volunteer tutors help struggling first grade readers to become confident, successful readers through this twice weekly school year program. In the coming year, Cities of Service plans to produce a case study on this intensive and fun literacy tutoring program to share best practices with the rest of the Cities of Service coalition. Stay tuned!

School-city partnership earns state award as Outstanding Mentoring Program

Each year, Virginia Mentoring Partnership (VMP) recognizes the contributions made by mentoring programs and volunteer mentors to the lives of young people in Virginia. This year, VMP has selected Virginia Beach READS as the recipient of its 2016 Outstanding Mentoring Program Award.
The Virginia Beach READS mentoring program is a collaborative partnership between Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS), Virginia Beach GrowSmart and the Virginia Beach Office of Volunteer Resources to support the goal of all Virginia Beach students reading proficiently by third grade. The grade-level benchmark is often cited as a predictor of on-time graduation.
Virginia Beach READS recruits and trains adult mentors who volunteer weekly to serve as positive role models for at-risk first-grade students at Bayside, Point O' View and White Oaks elementary schools. Mentors provide yearlong academic support in literacy using reading, language and writing activities developed by instructional specialists in the school division's Department of Teaching and Learning, who also provide training to Virginia Beach READS mentors.
“While the program is designed to support literacy, the mentors' yearlong commitment to our students also helps foster the personal development of these young learners. As they build their reading skills, they gain self-confidence, develop communication skills and become more independent learners,” said VBCPS Superintendent Aaron Spence. “We are grateful for the time these caring adults dedicate weekly in our schools and appreciate Virginia Mentoring Partnership's recognition of their valuable service through this school-city partnership.”
